Couchsurfing in China: The Giveaway

Update: The giveaway has ended. The winner is Sara Thomas!

China. The word alone evokes sights and scents and scenery.

I have much more to say about my trip to Shaoxing, China. My cousin, Justin, and his wife, Candi, who is also a longtime friend, allowed me to stay with them for one amazing week of catching up, exploration, and new experiences. I am now home, unpacked, with laundry mostly done, but my mind continues to drift back to memories made and ahead to new possibilities. Fair warning: this will not be a short series of posts, so if you’re not interested in hearing about China, you might not want to read for a while!

If you are interested (and why wouldn’t you be?), I’m kicking the series off with a giveaway. Both items were purchased in Hangzhou during a day of mad shopping on a pedestrian shopping street amid heat and the smell of stinky tofu. The giveaway includes hand lotion and a scarf.

The giveaway closes midnight PST on Saturday April 25. To enter, comment on this post telling me the craziest thing you’ve ever eaten. I need to know that I am not the only one who intentionally tries weird foods!

  1. Okay, I’ve got a couple of things to offer up here! Now, with that stated, I was told after the fact, once I had consumed everything on my plate, that the chicken I had just eaten was actually cat meat!!! Growing up in Hawai’i where there is a blending of cultures, and meals offering this fare was not an uncommon practice. However, I will say after that, I never ate anything that came prepared out of the back of a rolling station wagon kitchen!!! Other than that, I’ve eaten “ox-tail” soup and that, I will say, is delicious!

    1. Haha!! That’s both gross and funny! My approach in China was just to not question it when someone said “it’s chicken.” 🙂 Ignorance was bliss!

      1. That’s a great philosophy Cora! In my case, it was just the other persons’ way of wanting to see my reaction. and, as a kid, you can imagine my response! Everyone else that it was hysterical!!

  2. The grossest thing I’ve tried was Marmite over in England. They had commercials for it all the time (even giving it to babies) so my parents bought some for us to try. I was actually already in bed, and my oldest sister came and got me out of bed to try it! As a true older sister though, she neglected to give me the napkin to spit it out, so I was the only one in the family who actually swallowed it!

  3. Rocky Mountain Oysters, when I was in second grade we had to draw our favorite dish. That was mine, rocky Mountain oysters and ketchup. I would take they over ocean oysters anyday!

    1. Haha! I have never tried Rocky Mountain oysters 🙂 Although I did recently try actual oysters for the first time and actually liked them.

  4. Can’t wait to read ALL about your trip!! The craziest thing I’ve ever eaten was trying kangaroo at the top of the Sydney tower (rotating restaurant), when I visited Australia. I had an awful sinus infection, and couldn’t taste a thing that I ate that night, so I thought, why not try something crazy?!
